Krün: The last community bull – Bavaria

When it comes to traditions, any pathos always seems appropriate, so when traditions are over, they are often buried. There was talk of this recently in Krün in the upper Isar Valley, but in reality they did it differently there. In Krün they traditionally went to the butcher. Of course, it would have been a shame for the tradition incarnate, with a supposed live weight of 1200 kilograms. And the butcher thing is actually part of it. Except this time it was the last time.

Because the mayor, the local council’s agriculture officer and Schoggl, the farm name of the farmer who has been responsible for keeping animals for 90 years, will no longer travel together to the breeding market in Weilheim to auction off a new Max. Although other names were usually entered in his personal papers, as soon as such a breeding bull became the new Krüner community bull, his name was Max.

With the last journey of the last Max, this series ended at the Schogglhof from Max I to Max XXXVIII. could have been enough – at least a rough estimate, because no one knows for sure. However, the community bull was replaced every two or three years so that the cows in Krün did not become too genetically simple. So now they too will have to make do with these portions of semen frozen in liquid nitrogen from bulls that they never get to know in person. But in this case, the dating app has never served the cow, only the farmer.

In any case, the external auditors in Krün will now calm down. They once noted in 2017 that the municipality should at least charge farmers fees that cover costs if it absolutely wants to adhere to a law that requires it to provide breeding bulls. It was supposedly enacted in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1888. It no longer applies now. Instead, there should now be separate boxes with a run for bulls and at some point there will no longer be any tethering at all. And that becomes too time-consuming in the long run, even for the Krüners. The community bulls are not completely extinct, but there are no longer many of them. The last Max is served in a restaurant in the region.
