A fire broke out on the promenade in Westerland on Thursday morning. Several neighboring buildings had to be temporarily evacuated.
The roof structure of the Badezeit restaurant was completely destroyed after the fire, and the inside of the building was completely gutted. According to the control center, the emergency call came in shortly after six in the morning on Thursday. The fire brigades from Westerland and Tinnum were deployed with 110 emergency services and 17 vehicles. At around 10.30 a.m. it was “fire off”, according to operations manager Siegfried Engel. After that, the firefighters were still busy with post-extinguishing work. They could no longer save the building, the cause of the fire was initially unclear.
Neighboring buildings had to be evacuated
Because of the heavy smoke and the westerly wind that pushed the smoke onto the island, several apartment buildings in Fischerweg had to be cleared in the meantime, said operations manager Engel. A total of 89 people had to leave their homes. There were no injuries.
The restaurant on the promenade dates back to the 1950s when it was a dairy spa. In 1998 the business was converted into a restaurant.
