AfD wants to nominate chancellor candidates for the first time

The AfD is currently looking forward to a survey soaring. Now the party also wants to nominate a candidate for chancellor. Who is eligible?

According to its party leader Alice Weidel, the AfD wants to nominate a candidate for chancellor for the first time in the next federal election. When asked whether her party was considering such a step in view of the current polls, Weidel said in the RTL/ntv “early start”: “Of course. We would have done it without these values to nominate a candidate for chancellor.”

The next federal election will normally take place in late summer or autumn 2025. So far, the AfD had refrained from nominating a candidate for chancellor. In polls it is currently between 18 and 20 percent.

When asked if she believed herself capable of such a candidacy, Weidel said: “You can trust yourself to do a lot. But it’s completely open who will compete there.” Weidel leads the opposition party together with its co-chair Tino Chrupalla.

Normally, only parties with a realistic chance of becoming prime minister nominate a candidate for chancellor. The other parties in the Bundestag reject cooperation with the AfD.
