It’s time for the German Clásico again. Although FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund are not in the top positions in the table, it is still the football summit in Germany.

The whole of football Germany looks at the Bundesliga summit between FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (6.30 p.m. / Sky). Although both teams are not in one of the top 2 places in the table before the game in Dortmund, as they were more than a decade ago, that does not change the explosiveness and the importance.

“It’s a special game, we’re looking forward to it,” said Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann. He has to do without leader Thomas Müller after a corona infection, while Dortmund is missing captain Marco Reus.

FC Bayern have won ten of their last eleven league games against Dortmund, and most recently they have even won eight competitive games in a row. “It’s important that victory number nine follows. But in general it has no relevance for the game. You have to prove yourself again,” said Nagelsmann. “Victory is above all.”

BVB coach Edin Terzic hopes for an end to the Bayern series. “You need a lot of courage,” said Terzic. The winner of the duel is the leader of the table for at least one night. Then the current leaders 1. FC Union Berlin and SC Freiburg can follow suit.

The German Clásico has produced many memorable moments in the past: There was Oliver Kahn in kung fu style, Jan Koller as a temporary goalkeeper or Robert Lewandowski in constant goal scoring. A selection:

April 3, 1999

Top games like against BVB always motivated Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. On this April day he seems out of his mind. First he tries to bite BVB striker Heiko Herrlich in the neck, then he jumps in kung fu manner towards the aghast looking BVB striker Stephane Chapuisat. Kahn later explained that he was under pressure because of criticism and that after a goal conceded the “lid came off the boiler”. The game ends 2:2.

BVB goalkeeper Jens Lehmann is sent off, but BVB can no longer change. So the 2.02 meter striker Jan Koller goes into the goal. 24 minutes long – and remains without a goal. The “kicker” then called him into the eleven of the day. As a goalkeeper, of course. Koller had also scored 1-0 for BVB, who still lost 1-2 in Munich.

The Dortmunders create the ultimate humiliation of FC Bayern – and have to pay for it later. After the championship title in 2011 and the already secure title defense, BVB dismantled the Munich team 5:2 in the DFB Cup final. Bayern President Uli Hoeneß directly announced that he would show “where the hammer is”. The Munich team then grabbed Mario Götze, Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels one after the other – and have been German champions ever since. However, Hummels and Götze, who has meanwhile switched to Eintracht Frankfurt, later returned to BVB.

The game that wrote German football history: For the first and only time, two German teams are contesting a Champions League final. At London’s Wembley Stadium, Dortmund is equal. When everyone was preparing for extra time, Arjen Robben scored the 2-1 winning goal for Bayern, who not only suffered a bitter defeat in the cup final a year earlier, but also in the Champions League final “at home” against Chelsea.

November 10, 2018

In perhaps the most spectacular classic for years, BVB triumphed 3-2. Bayern take the lead twice through Robert Lewandowski, twice the outstanding Marco Reus can equalize. In the end, Paco Alcácer scored the winning goal and gave Borussia a seven-point lead.

With a masterful demonstration of power, FC Bayern stormed back to the top of the Bundesliga. The German record champion sends the humiliated and disenchanted rival home 5-0. Robert Lewandowski (2), Mats Hummels, Javi Martínez and Serge Gnabry present the completely overwhelmed BVB. Curious: Despite the title goal gala, Bayern coach Niko Kovac has to fear for his job.
