In order to get promoted to the Bundesliga, HSV has to make up for a 0:3 loss from the relegation first leg against Stuttgart. A difficult task, in which coach Tim Walter also has personnel concerns.

Before the relegation second leg against VfB Stuttgart, Tim Walter wants to create nothing less than a football miracle with Hamburger SV.

“The boys have already taken a few arrears and we kept getting up,” said the Hamburger SV coach before the duel with VfB (8.45 p.m. / Sky and Sat.1). Hamburg had lost the first leg in Stuttgart 0:3.

That’s why there are only a few chances in Hamburg – not so Walter. The 47-year-old recalled the 3-3 win over 1. FC Heidenheim in February, where HSV was 3-0 down over 70 minutes. “We have comeback qualities,” said Walter. As a possible bargaining chip he sees the sold out Volksparkstadion with 57,000 spectators. “The aim is to score a goal first,” said Walter. Then the stadium would “definitely go along too”. Of course, it is clear that the gap of three goals is large, “but we are trying to work our way forward bit by bit”.

In order to achieve this, Walter demands an increase in performance from his players. “We have to act better.” In the first leg, VfB scored two of their three goals from corner kicks, and ex-Hamburger Josha Vagnoman scored. Over a long period of time, HSV was clearly at a disadvantage in the duel with the Bundesliga side. Turning the game is “not impossible,” Walter said. “And we will try that too.”

In addition to Anssi Suhonen, who is suspended after a red card, Jonas David could also be absent. The central defender was “sickly”, certified Walter. It is unclear whether David will be replaced in position or whether Walter will deviate from his back four. “That’s my business,” Walter said on Sunday. One thing is already clear before kick-off: David’s absence would not make the planned race to catch up in Hamburg any easier.
