Leon Goretzka was the man of the evening in the 5-1 win against Union Berlin. The Bayern professional is getting closer to his big European Championship goal. There is praise from Tuchel and Matthäus.

Leon Goretzka sent in an application for the home European Championship with an outstanding performance against 1. FC Union Berlin.

“That’s my clear goal. I think. Currently my attitude is that I try to always be on the pitch and show Julian (Nagelsmann) that I’m there and accept the fight. That’s what I try to do week after week To make room to somehow jump on the bandwagon,” Goretzka said on Sky after the 5-1 win against 1. FC Union Berlin.

Goretzka was not taken into account for the test matches at the end of March. The door wasn’t closed for anyone, Nagelsmann said afterwards. In Berlin, the midfielder became the man of the evening. The 29-year-old not only scored the important 1-0, he was overflowing with enthusiasm and played a decisive role in three other goals. Goretzka could be found almost everywhere on the field and created space on the wings with numerous sprints into the depths.

Record national player Lothar Matthäus praised Goretzka’s “fighting quality” on Sky. “The changes of pace, the pursuit into the penalty area, the strength in duels. Leon is always an important player for the team, not just at Bayern, for the national team,” said Matthäus. Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel was also enthusiastic. “He’s got his form back. He’s strong and helped us win,” said the 50-year-old.
