Bundesliga game in Augsburg: Police officer charged after shooting at fan bus – Bavaria

After a police officer fired a shot during the Bundesliga match between FC Augsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach, the public prosecutor’s office has brought charges against the shooter. She accuses the USK official of causing grievous bodily harm while in office and damaging property.

In the incident in August 2023, several police officers who were in an emergency vehicle with the shooter suffered blast trauma. An officer was injured by a splinter of glass when the bullet penetrated the window of the police car from the inside and the projectile ultimately hit a Gladbach fan bus without causing any further injury.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the police officer fired the shot in the vehicle “for no understandable reason.” A few days after the incident, riot police said a group of officers had splashed themselves with water before the incident because of the heat. However, it remained unclear why the then 27-year-old grabbed a gun and a shot was fired. The shooter was suspended after the incident.

The Augsburg Regional Court will decide whether there will be a trial. The police officer faces a prison sentence of between six months and ten years. It is the presumption of innocence.
