Building fire kills at least 25 in Istanbul

The toll is heavy and has continued to rise. This Tuesday, a fire broke out in Istanbul (Turkey) in the basement of a sixteen-story building, causing numerous victims, the governor’s office announced.

“Although the fire was extinguished thanks to the intervention of firefighters, 25 people lost their lives. Three people are hospitalized in serious condition,” he announced this afternoon in a new press release.

The fire broke out during work carried out in the basement of a 16-story residential building located in Gayrettepe, a district of the central Besiktas district, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül told journalists.

A nightclub was located in the basement, according to the newly reappointed mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, who visited the site. “The fire has been brought under control. Let’s hope that there are no more victims,” he said, offering his “condolences” to the victims’ relatives.
