Buchenwald concentration camp liberated 77 years ago – survivors at a memorial service

A commemoration ceremony was held at the Buchenwald Memorial near Weimar on Sunday to commemorate the liberation of the former Nazi concentration camp 77 years ago. For the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic, the guests included concentration camp survivors from Israel, Poland and Romania, among others. Around 500 people attended the celebration.

Holocaust survivor Anastasia Guley from Ukraine also took part. The 96-year-old survivor of the Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Bergen-Belsen camps fled to Germany after the Russian attack on her homeland. She now lives in Saxony-Anhalt. In addition to the former prisoners Naftali Fürst from Israel and Vasile Nussbaum from Romania, Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, also gave a speech. In it he described it as a “shame” that “of all things, survivors of the Shoa have to suffer like this again at the end of their difficult life”.
