Sahra Wagenknecht can imagine running for chancellor in 2025, but wants to “stay on the carpet”. First of all, her party is hoping for good results in the state elections in the east.

BSW party leader Sahra Wagenknecht does not completely rule out running for chancellor in the 2025 federal election. “We’ll talk about that when we know where we are at the end of the year,” said the former left-wing politician to the “Rheinische Post”.

“We have good surveys and high potential, but we should also stay on the carpet. We were founded just two months ago. At the end of the year we will see in more detail where we stand.” Wagenknecht left the left and founded a new party, the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht.

The BSW is hoping for strong election results in the European elections on June 9th and in the state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg in September. Wagenknecht confirmed that she could possibly imagine working with the CDU in Saxony. “Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer in Saxony, for example, is actually one of the few who supports our position that energy prices must fall and that we need a foreign trade policy that serves our interests,” emphasized Wagenknecht. She added: “If we become strong enough to shape a new policy together with others, we will enter into a coalition. We are not available as a majority procurer for a business as usual.”
