Broadcast Ballon d’Or 2023 now live in the free stream on discovery+ – election with Messi, Haaland, & Co.

On Monday evening there will be a prestigious event at the Théatre du Châtelet in Paris. The French trade magazine “France Football” is awarding the prize for the 67th time Ballon d’Or and thus chooses him best footballer in the world.

For the second time in a row, the election does not look at the calendar year, but rather at the performance in the previous (European) season. This means the 2022/23 season comes into focus – and with it automatically top scorers Erling Haaland. The former Dortmund player not only took Manchester but also Europe by storm and celebrated the second treble in English football history with the Citizens. Haaland contributed 52 goals in 53 games, but the Ballon d’Or is anything but certain for the 23-year-old.

That’s how it should be Lionel Messi are considered the favorite, for the Argentine it would be the eighth golden ball in his collection. At Paris Saint-Germain, Messi accumulated a whopping 41 goals in 41 games (21 goals, 20 assists), but internationally PSG was already over in the Champions League round of 16 against FC Bayern Munich. Nevertheless, Messi has a big trump card in his hand. In December 2022, the 36-year-old was crowned world champion with Argentina and was voted player of the tournament – the key to the Ballon d’Or? Incidentally, Messi’s performances for his new club Inter Miami are not included in the evaluation.

With Jamal Musiala (FC Bayern Munich) and Ilkay Gündogan (FC Barcelona) there are two German players among the nominees, but the two national players are hardly given any chances.

Ballon d’Or 2023 live: Haaland against the “Phalanx of the Old”

If Erling Haaland were to be awarded the Ballon d’Or after the historic 2022/23 triple season with Manchester City, he would break through the “Phalanx of the Old”. In the past seven years, the Ballon d’Or has always gone to players who were at least 30 years old. Cristiano Ronaldo (2016, 2017), Luka Modric (2018), Lionel Messi (2019, 2021) and Karim Benzema (2022) were each over 30 years old when they received the award. The last time a player who had not yet broken the 30 mark was honored was in 2015. His name: Messi.

Ballon d’Or 2023 live: Will Messi extend his record?

Lionel Messi could extend his already impressive record from seven to eight with another win at the 2023 Ballon d’Or. This would mean he would further expand his lead over rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar has five golden balls, the last one he secured in 2017. Behind him are big names like Marco van Basten, Johan Cruyff and Michel Platini (three each). The most successful non-European is Ronaldo Nazario. The Brazilian was named the best footballer in the world in 1997 and 2002. The Ballon d’Or was only opened to non-European players in 1995.

With Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gündogan, two Germans are in the top 30 of the Ballon d’Or 2023, but the two national team colleagues have no chance of making it big. In the history of the Ballon d’Or, there have so far been five German players who have been able to claim the title. Franz Beckenbauer and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge achieved this feat twice, and Gerd Müller, Lothar Matthäus and Matthias Sammer were each named the best footballer in the world once. | To the report

Ballon d’Or 2023 live: Messi or Haaland? Guardiola surprises with suggestion

At the 2023 Ballon d’Or, everything comes down to the duel between Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland. Pep Guardiola, who has coached both superstars throughout his career, was torn in the run-up to the award ceremony in Paris. “I’ve always said that the Ballon d’Or should be awarded in two parts, one for Messi and one for the other, so Haaland should win, yes,” Guardiola made an unusual suggestion. The worst season for Messi was “the best for the rest of the players”. | To the report
