British Foreign Minister Cameron’s Berlin visit to Baerbock is intended to send a sign of strength and unity. But the timing couldn’t be spicier.

Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Cameron wants to meet his German colleague Annalena Baerbock in Berlin today. According to information from London, in addition to the Gaza war, it will also be about strengthening support for Ukraine.

Cameron said in advance that one cannot isolate oneself from the crises. “Our response must be one of strength, resilience and unity. We must expand our defense, stay close to our strongest allies like Germany and reach out to new allies.”

The city of Berlin is a reminder of the destructive power of war. More than 30 years ago, he saw the wall fall and peace being restored. “Today I stand here again at a time of danger and uncertainty in the world, as Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine rages on.”

Cameron’s visit coincides with the investigation into the Luftwaffe wiretapping affair

On Friday, Russia published a recorded conference call between four senior officers. In it, they discussed operational scenarios for the Taurus cruise missiles in the event that they were to be delivered to Ukraine. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has currently ruled out this and justified his rejection by saying that Germany could then be drawn into the war.

What is considered explosive is that the recording also mentioned that the British had “a few people on site” because of the Storm Shadow cruise missiles they had delivered to Ukraine. This was never officially confirmed.

Former Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told the Times newspaper: “We know that Germany is heavily penetrated by Russian intelligence services. That shows that it is neither safe nor reliable.” The British government reacted more cautiously. A spokesman for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it was obviously a matter for Germany to investigate the case. But he also emphasized that Britain was the first country to deliver longer-range cruise missiles to Ukraine, “and we would encourage our allies to do the same.”
