Wet Leg and Harry Styles top the list of Britain’s most important music awards with four nominations each.

Harry Styles (28) and the band Wet Leg lead the this year’s list of Brit Awards with four nominations each. The former One Direction star was nominated for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop/R&B Act and Artist of the Year.

The indie pop band Wet Leg has just as many chances of winning a prize as the pop star – which is also nominated for the first time ever: the categories “Album of the Year”, “Group of the Year”, “Best new Act” and ” Best Rock/Alternative Act” lists the band’s name.

Also a German among the nominees

Other Brit Awards nominees include George Ezra (29), Ed Sheeran (31) and Elton John (75) for Song of the Year, The 1975 for Group of the Year and Best Rock/Alternative Act, Calvin Harris (38) for “Best Dance Act”, Stormzy (29) for “Best Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act” and Dua Lipa (27) and Sam Smith (30) for “Best Pop/R&B Act”.

In the international categories, Beyoncé (41), Kendrick Lamar (35), Lizzo (34) and Taylor Swift (33) compete against each other. A German also made it to the Brits this year: Kim Petras (30) was nominated for best song for her single “Unholy” with Sam Smith.

Only men in the main category

The nomination list drew a lot of criticism on social media. As of last year, the Brit Awards no longer separate their categories by gender – actually to be more “inclusive”. Despite this, the main category “Artist of the Year” is now exclusively male this year with Central Cee (24), Stormzy, Fred Again (29), George Ezra and Harry Styles. Female-led acts make this year’s nomination list according to the Guardians only 33% off.

The Brit Awards are Britain’s premier music awards and are presented on February 11th.
