The creators of the Netflix series “Bridgerton” leave nothing to chance. The jewelry worn by the daughters of the Bridgerton and Featherington families also has a special meaning. Especially that of Daphne and Penelope.

Diamonds, rubies and emeralds. From the daughters of the Bridgerton and Featherington families to the Queen and Lady Danbury, they all wear striking jewellery. And that’s no coincidence, as jeweler Sheryl Jones tells W Magazine: “I found the jewelry so interesting because it seems to tie into the story. The costume designer gave each lady a different necklace in almost every scene.”

Another detail is also striking: “The Bridgertons’ clothes are always kept in icy blue to gray tones, while the Featheringtons always appear in these yellow and orange tones and bright pink tones,” explains Jones. “Yellow is the color of knowledge and truth, which I find very interesting, especially when it comes to Penelope.”

Daphne Bridgerton’s necklace also has a special meaning: “In the beginning, Daphne always wears very simple, small diamond jewelry. Everything is tight on her neck. Then the chains get bigger,” says Jones, explaining that this change is symbolic of Daphne’s development from childish naivety to adult woman. For example, if she wears blue stones, this is meant to symbolize her commitment to tradition. “This color is classic, timeless and never goes out of style,” says Jones.

Throughout the first season, Marina, the poorer cousin adopted into the Featherington family, wears seedpearl necklaces. According to Jones, these stand for “the hope of something greater” and show that their status is lower than that of the Featheringtons or the Bridgertons in society. Marina’s jewels underscore her growing pregnancy and her hope to marry her true love and continue to rise in society.

“The big, garish pieces of jewelry are worn by the Featherington girls. These gaudy necklaces are a contrast to what Daphne and Marina are wearing,” says Jones. “And Lady Danbury wears either aquamarines or emeralds when spreading gossip, for these stones are known for their ability to communicate.”

Jones also surmises that most of the jewelry used in the series appears to be costume jewelry, although some of it looks real.

The reason people are still so interested in “Bridgerton” and the extravagance of the costumes, Jones believes, is because “women still wear jewelry as a symbol of their marriage or engagement, or mix it with pieces that they have inherited from relatives”. People are proud to wear something that has a story behind it. Interest in fine jewelry and luxury can thus outlast fashion and time.
