Brenner motorway accessible again after hours of closure

Due to heavy snowfall, the Austrian Brenner motorway had to be closed on Friday in the south between Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass until late at night. According to motorway operator Asfinag, around 40 centimeters of fresh snow fell within a short period of time on the important traffic route from Germany to Italy. The highway has been accessible again since Friday night.

More than 20 clearing vehicles and 150 towed trucks

The closure had been in place since Friday afternoon. The disruptions occurred because trucks used several lanes of the highway despite driving and overtaking bans and then got stuck in the snow.

The trucks blocked snow removal vehicles and other cars, as reported by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (external link). More than 20 clearing vehicles and tow trucks were on the highway. More than 150 trucks had to be towed “under the most difficult conditions.”
