The retail chains REWE, Penny, Aldi and Netto no longer want to sell products made in Russia. Even if it affects a few items – the company is concerned with a sign.
In reaction to the war against Ukraine, several German supermarket chains are removing Russian products from their ranges. The retail group REWE, for example, announced that it would “delist foodstuffs that are produced in Russia at a central level”. This also applies to the Penny discount chain, which belongs to the company.
The group no longer wants to order the affected items. Products available in the warehouses and markets would not be destroyed, but sold or gradually made available to food bank organizations and similar initiatives.
Listed “indefinitely”.
The discounters Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd also no longer want to sell products made in Russia. Aldi Süd announced that only the vodka in the 0.7-liter bottle was affected by the decision. “We have decided to discontinue the item indefinitely,” the company said. One wants to set an example in the current situation.
Germany’s largest food retailer Edeka is currently reviewing its range of goods. According to the cooperative, the dealer association wants to clarify “whether and to what extent we have products from Russia or from companies that are in the hands of Russian oligarchs in our range”.
Confectionery and ready meals are also affected
The Edeka headquarters have not had any active business relationships with manufacturers based in Russia for a long time. The head office in Hamburg is responsible for national purchasing. However, it cannot be ruled out that some of the independent Edeka retailers will offer individual items at a regional or local level.
The discounter Netto had previously announced a boycott of Russian goods. The chain with 340 stores in eight German federal states followed its Danish parent company Salling Group. In total, there are around 15 items that will be taken off the shelves – including confectionery, ready meals and spirits.
