There’s no escaping the G-word. Wherever people gather, some of whom are under the age of thirty, whenever a prominent person of that age speaks out, or whenever some social phenomenon needs to be explained, the term der reliably appears generation in the text – it is a linguistic and intellectual virus. The opinions and actions of young people can no longer seem to be understood otherwise than by a silent, unanimous chorus that needs a few soloists to make themselves heard, and these are the famous ones voices of their generation.
