Book Ban A number of books are banned in US prisons – culture

The fact that books by Amanda Gorman, picture books about gay penguins and, most recently, even William Shakespeare have been banned from some classrooms and curricula has become a sad everyday occurrence in some American cities. The writers’ organization PEN America has now also looked into the book situation in American prisons, interviewed employees and prisoners – and presented a detailed report on banned books in correctional facilities: “Reading between the Bars” translates roughly as: reading behind bars. The fact that certain books are not allowed in prisons is not a new phenomenon; in fact, it is the “most pervasive form of censorship in the United States,” the report says.
