Bomb in Wiesbaden-Biebrich: Evacuation of 10,000 residents continues to be delayed | hessenschau.de

After the bomb was found in the Biebrich district of Wiesbaden, the evacuation began. Around 10,000 residents are affected, and two highways also have to be closed. But not everything is going according to plan at the moment.

The city of Wiesbaden announced on Tuesday evening that the World War II bomb was found during construction work in Biebrich, opposite Kallebad. The bomb was originally supposed to be defused or detonated in a controlled manner by 12 noon on Wednesday afternoon.

It is questionable whether the schedule can be adhered to. As the operations management said on Wednesday morning, the evacuation measures will probably be delayed until 11 a.m. According to plan, the evacuation of the exclusion zone should be completed by 9 a.m.

Transports and resistance take time

Emergency services from the public order office, fire department, police, aid organizations and explosive ordnance disposal service had been on duty since early morning. Around 100 people would have to be transported out of the area lying down; individual journeys would take more time, it was said on site.

The operations management explained that residents were still reporting who needed help with transport from the evacuation area. In addition, some residents resisted the evacuation, which delayed the measures. As of 10:30 a.m., according to police, only three quarters of the affected apartments had been evacuated.

Before defusing or controlled demolition, the emergency services check the restricted area using, among other things, thermal imaging cameras.

Large crowds in the care center

The radius of the evacuation area was set at one kilometer on Tuesday evening, and more than 10,000 residents are affected. There are eight daycare centers in the radius; no emergency care is offered there, according to the city. Holiday care has also been canceled at three schools.

For people who cannot stay with family, friends or acquaintances outside the exclusion zone, the city has set up a care center with 200 places in the association house in the Dotzheim district. Because of the high number of people, another emergency accommodation is now being prepared in a school, it was said during the evacuation operation.

Citizen telephone set up

A citizen telephone (0611 / 31-8080) was also activated on Tuesday evening to answer questions or organize transport for people who cannot move out of the area independently. The city asked that you refrain from calling the emergency numbers 110 and 112. The city provides ongoing information about the situation on its own Info page.

Impairments in traffic

Drivers also have to prepare for closures. In addition to some streets in the city, the A643 and the A66 in the Schiersteiner Kreuz area are also affected.

The A66 has been closed since the morning in both directions between Wiesbaden-Biebrich and Wiesbaden-Frauenstein and the A643 between Wiesbaden-Äppelallee and Schiersteiner Kreuz. It is unclear when the closures will be lifted.

According to the city, Deutsche Bahn will also stop passenger and freight traffic on the route between Wiesbaden-Biebrich and Eltville (Rheingau-Taunus) from 11.40 a.m.
