As an icon of the English national football team, World Cup hero and celebrated goalscorer for record champions Manchester United, Bobby Charlton was revered as a national hero on the island. The Munich plane disaster also shaped the Englishman’s life. Sir Bobby died on Saturday morning at the age of 86, his family announced on Saturday. “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family.”
Bobby Charlton set numerous football records
In the final of the 1966 World Cup in their own country, England defeated the German national team 4-2 after extra time in a spectacular match. The legendary Wembley goal, which experts and fans still argue about to this day, also fell – named after the venue in London.
Charlton was one of the defining figures of the England team during the World Cup and was also voted Europe’s Footballer of the Year in 1966. In 1973 he ended his active career with numerous records.
Sir Bobby Charlton is survived by his wife Norma, two daughters and several grandchildren.
