After the accident of a boat, numerous people are missing near the Greek holiday island of Rhodes, 29 have been rescued so far. The migrants were on their way from Turkey to Italy.
Dozens of people are missing after a boat carrying migrants sank near the Greek islands of Rhodes and Karpathos.
The Greek coast guard announced that a large-scale operation to rescue the missing people had been launched east of the island of Karpathos. According to this, 29 people have been rescued so far. They told the rescue workers that there were 60 to 80 people on board at the time of the accident.
According to the information, the rescued came from Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. According to the authorities, the boat started in Turkey and was supposed to bring people to Italy.
Rescue operation at wind force 6
The rescue operation is being hampered by force 6 winds, the Coast Guard said. In addition to coast guard patrol boats, a ship from the Greek Navy, three passing freighters and a helicopter are taking part in the search and rescue operation.
Karpathos is located in the Aegean between Rhodes and Crete. Most asylum seekers from the Middle East, Asia and Africa use the route from Turkey to the Greek islands. However, since the Greek authorities have increased their patrols, many people are trying to go directly to Italy.
