Black ice in Bavaria: more than 100 accidents due to slippery roads – Bavaria

Rain on frozen ground led to slippery roads and numerous traffic accidents in Lower Bavaria, Upper Franconia and the Upper Palatinate. On the A6 near Amberg, 20 vehicles were involved in accidents over one kilometer.

On the roads in eastern Bavaria, which were slippery because of the freezing rain, there were more than a hundred crashes on Thursday evening and on Friday night. There were several slightly injured, but most of the accidents remained with sheet metal damage, as the police headquarters in Lower Bavaria, Upper Palatinate and Upper Franconia announced on Christmas Eve.

On the Autobahn 6 near Amberg in the Upper Palatinate, a total of 20 vehicles were involved in accidents on Thursday evening over a section of about one kilometer. A police spokesman said that six people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.

On the A93 between Wiesau and Mitterteich, twelve vehicles crashed into each other in two accidents. Three people were slightly injured and taken to hospitals. The police recorded a total of 69 accidents in the Upper Palatinate because of the sudden freezing rain. 38 of them happened in the city and district of Regensburg, 16 in the Amberg and Schwandorf area.

The police in Lower Bavaria had to go out for around 50 ice accidents on Friday evening and night. In an accident on the A92 near Plattling, a person was injured, otherwise almost all operations remained in the event of property damage. According to the police, the focus was on Deggendorf, Plattling, Landau, Passau and Rottal.

A spokesman for the police in Upper Franconia also spoke of around 40 ice-related accidents in the area. There were some people who were slightly injured. Due to a series of accidents, the A73 near Coburg had to be completely closed for several hours on Thursday evening. According to the police, it crashed four times within 20 minutes. Individual sections, especially valley bridges, were almost impassable.

The German Weather Service also warned on Friday of local black ice due to freezing rain in Lower Bavaria. In parts of Upper Franconia, it could be slippery on Saturday morning due to little snow.
