Birth: Midwifery School on Maistraße in Munich closes – Munich

The Munich midwifery school was trained for 244 years. What is the job? From unrealistic demands on childbirth, women who bring their children into the world alone and trauma coping, which is important in obstetrics.

For more than 100 years, the historic building at Maistraße 11 was the home of the midwifery school together with the university gynecological clinic. About 2500 babies were born there every year. Instead of screaming children, every step now echoes through the corridors of the former maternity ward. The operating theaters are almost empty – apart from a few cupboards and a disused bathtub, nothing reminds us that babies were once born here. It is the last days of the midwifery school in Isarvorstadt. The women’s clinic moved out in June.
