Sparrows and titmice are currently the most common sightings in Germany. This emerges from an interim result at the “Hour of the Winter Birds” on Sunday. But blackbirds and tree sparrows also often appeared. The German Nature Conservation Association (Nabu) in Berlin and the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) in Hilpoltstein, Bavaria, had called for what they said was the largest scientific participation campaign in Germany for the 14th time.
To do this, people should watch the birds at the feeders in gardens, parks or on the balcony for an hour from Friday to Sunday. With the help of long-term observations, the experts want to get information about how the local bird world is changing.
What is striking is that more jays and great spotted woodpeckers have been observed this year compared to last year, said Nabu expert Martin Rümmler. This could be because there were particularly many acorns, beechnuts and spruce seeds at that time and these birds found enough food in the forest. This year, however, some forest birds increasingly visited feeding places. Observations can be reported online, via app or post until January 15th.
