Since 2014, Billy Joel has been performing monthly at Madison Square Garden in New York. Next year he will play his last show there.

Billy Joel (74) announces the end of his show at New York’s Madison Square Garden Residency after ten years. He will perform there for the last time in July 2024.

After 150 issues it’s over

“It’s hard to end,” he said according to People magazine at a press conference in New York on June 1. “I want to thank our audience for coming to our shows for so long. I just want to say thank you to everyone for the wonderful thing that happened here.” On the “Uptown Girl” singer’s Instagram page it says that after “ten extraordinary years” its show will end with the 150th edition in July 2024. “I’m a little amazed it’s taken this long,” said Billy Joel, who has sold more than six million tickets in that time.

He first performed at Madison Square Garden in 1978

In 1978, the New York native made his first appearance at Madison Square Garden. That was the high point of his career. “Everyone in the world knows when you play The Garden it’s not just New York.” In 2014 his monthly performances began. Joel is the only music artist with a so-called residency in the famous event hall. “I never thought anyone could have a residency here. It’s just been one crazy, exciting night after another. For me, my band, The Garden is more than just our office.” It is a home. “If you google Billy Joel’s house, they show Madison Square Garden, which is kinda cool.”

Speaking of the house, the six-time Grammy winner is looking to sell his Long Island home. But he will remain loyal to the Big Apple. “I’m just spending a little more time in Florida like old Jewish boys from New York City do,” he joked at the press conference. Before he has time for that, the piano man will be on stage for his final performances at Madison Square Garden beginning in October.
