The date was already a statement: On August 22nd, a good month before the federal election, Bild-TV, the television offshoot of the Axel Springer tabloid, was launched. Declared goal: to become serious competition for public broadcasting by ARD and ZDF. Implicit goal: Show what you can do with your own profile right at the Bundestag election.
On the crucial election evening, it apparently did not work to perfection: From the Berlin group, in which the party leaders and top candidates discussed after the election, Bild-TV took minute-long passages directly from ARD and ZDF. Also graphics with the forecasts and an interview with SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil are said to have been shown according to media reports by the public broadcasters on Bild-TV. Upon request, ARD and ZDF confirmed that there were no agreements for this takeover of the live signals by Bild-TV. The public broadcasters are currently examining “legal consequences”.
image defended the takeover of the images when asked by the SZ: “In the context of our current election reporting, we quoted the widely differing forecasts live with clear references to the source and adopted selected sequences from the ‘Berliner Runde’ and classified them for our viewers.” The discussion round organized by ARD and ZDF is also relevant for people “who want to find out more on election evening”.
