“Between 500 and 600 million euros in stakes in France” on betting sites during the World Cup

There should still be thousands (or even millions) of bets this Wednesday evening, on the occasion of France-Morocco, for the semi-final of the World Cup. Which player will score first? What will the score be at halftime? Will there be a penalty scored? So many questions that the lambda bettor asks himself and hopes, by answering them, to win the jackpot. And, the further France goes, the better it is for betting sites.

“The course of the French team has a big influence on the interest of sports fans for the competition, explains to AFP Nicolas Béraud, founder and boss of the online sports betting site Betclic and vice-president of the ‘Afjel, which brings together approved operators in the sector. Betclic is present in several European countries, we are particularly very strong in Poland, and after the elimination of its team, we saw the interest of Polish bettors for the World Cup drop enormously. Others like England, eliminated in the quarters, are football countries and will continue to bet. »

Five euros per bettor per week, on average

The boss of the partner site of the French basketball championship also returned to what the World Cup will bring to sports betting operators: “There will be 3 to 4 million bettors online and between 500 and 600 million bets. France, develops Nicolas Béraud. Of these 500 million euros, the operators’ income is 15%, therefore 75 million, of which we pay 55%, therefore 40 million, to the State. This leaves 35 million euros, shared by 17 operators who have a sports betting license. »

Regarding the players, compared to what they have really spent, “it is 15% of these 500 million euros, because the rate of return to the players is 85%. This represents expenses, per week, of 5 euros per bettor on average. We are really on reasonable sums: it is entertainment. There is no explosion of problem gambling. »
