Bret Easton Ellis laments the change in book culture. His view of film culture is no less resigned: “Narrative cinema is also dying.”

The writer Bret Easton Ellis (59) laments the dwindling influence of literature in society. “The heyday of the novel is over,” Ellis told the editorial network Germany (RND). “Novels are no longer part of the discourse of the intelligentsia.”

There is still a lot of reading, as is shown, for example, by the many book groups and book clubs on the Internet. “But book culture isn’t at the center of public life like it was when I was growing up,” the author (“American Psycho”) said.

“The things we loved are losing their meaning. Narrative cinema is also dying,” he continued. “Superheroes and blockbusters are shown in the cinema, the streaming services have taken care of the rest.” And he added: “Nothing that has replaced books and films is better.”
