Bernau am Chiemsee: Man almost hit by train because of umbrella – Bavaria

An 83-year-old was almost hit by a train in Bernau am Chiemsee in Upper Bavaria (Rosenheim district) when he wanted to get his umbrella from the track area. As the federal police announced on Thursday, during the incident on Wednesday the man was able to climb back onto the platform around 15 meters from the front of the moving long-distance train.

His 77-year-old wife wanted to throw him the forgotten umbrella across the tracks from the opposite platform. However, the umbrella ended up between the rails and the man climbed down to get it. Meanwhile, according to federal police, the train was traveling at around 130 kilometers per hour.

The train driver noticed the man and applied the emergency brake. Shortly behind the end of the platform, the last carriage of the train came to a halt. According to information, the approximately 140 passengers were uninjured during the emergency braking. The man sustained minor abrasions on his hands while climbing onto the platform. The federal police are now investigating the 83-year-old because of a negligent, dangerous interference with rail traffic.
