Bernard Cazeneuve leaves the Socialist Party after the alliance sealed with LFI

The former Prime Minister has made his decision: he is turning the page on socialism. This Wednesday, Bernard Cazeneuve announced to leave the PS at the regional weekly The Free Channel. “I left the Socialist Party in disagreement with the alliance made with the party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon”, declared Bernard Cazeneuve.

He mentioned “a political formation, La France Insoumise, of which I had to suffer the violence, the excess of positions, the insults also when I was in government, especially when the death of Rémi Fraisse occurred” , an activist who died during a demonstration in 2014, when he was Minister of the Interior. “I also have a clear and firm conception of secularism, of the Republic”, he continues, “which prohibits any convergence with those whose thinking on these questions is more than ambiguous”. François Hollande’s last head of government (2016-2017) finally invokes “old hostility of the LFI to the European project”.

The LFI / PS agreement at the heart of its decision

The one who was part of the government of François Hollande had warned that in the event of an agreement between his party and that of the Insoumis, he would slam the door. He had then estimated that the leaders of the PS had “lost their compass” of a “republican socialism”. Jean-Marc Ayrault, stationed at Matignon at the start of François Hollande’s five-year term, between 2012 and 2014, for his part described Wednesday as “tinkering” the agreement concluded between LFI and the PS, regretting a “form of resignation” from the part of his party.

The agreement concluded between insubordinate France (LFI) and the Socialist Party (PS) for the legislative elections in June enabled the PS to obtain 70 constituencies. Few for a large government party but more than the Communists who had nevertheless obtained a better score in the presidential election than Anne Hidalgo, PS candidate. This agreement must still be submitted to the internal approval of the Socialists on Thursday evening.
