Early on Sunday morning, two inmates managed to escape from a Berlin prison. They are considered mentally ill and dangerous. This is not the first incident this week.

Two mentally ill criminals who were considered dangerous were released from prison on Christmas Eve Berlin-Reinickendorf fled. Two nurses were injured in the outbreak, which occurred early Sunday morning. One of them was taken to hospital with stab wounds, the other was treated as an outpatient, the police and health authorities said. Now we are looking for the escapees.

The prison is a secure hospital in the Wittenau district where mentally ill or addicted criminals are housed. According to current findings, a 34-year-old inmate is said to have called a 45-year-old nurse to him at around 3:30 a.m. under some pretext and then knocked her down with a pan.

A 53-year-old colleague of the woman rushed to help and was then allegedly attacked by the man with a knife. According to dpa information, she suffered injuries to her neck. The suspected attacker and another inmate then fled the prison premises.

Escaping men in Berlin could be armed

According to the information, the two escapees are considered dangerous because of their mental illnesses. At least one of the two could be armed with a knife. The police and the health administration responsible for enforcing the measures did not provide any further information, citing investigative reasons.

Only on the night of last Wednesday, unknown people tried to free a member of a well-known Arab clan from another Berlin prison in the Buch district. According to the health administration, the plan failed because security guards noticed the break-in and intervened. The unknown people fled.

There are currently other cases of escaped criminals: On December 14th, an inmate at the Mannheim correctional facility used a doctor’s visit at the clinic in the neighboring city of Ludwigshafen to escape. On October 30th, a prisoner from the Bruchsal JVA escaped during a guarded trip to a quarry lake in Germersheim and broke his ankle bracelet using a tool. He is also still a fugitive.

A convicted criminal who did not return to his ward on December 11th in Viersen, North Rhine-Westphalia, after an unaccompanied exit within the premises of a psychiatric clinic, turned himself in at a police station in Rhineland-Palatinate a few days later.
