Berlin Theater Meeting: Interview with Artistic Director Matthias Pees – Culture

The Berlin Theatertreffen is the most important, oldest, most influential and often the most beautiful theater festival in the country – and always good for a few excitements. The complex selection process is unique: a jury of seven theater critics viewed hundreds of performances in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in order to come to an agreement on ten “remarkable” productions in long debates. Naturally, the festival is always controversial, but each of the discussions about the sense and nonsense of the meeting seems to only make it more interesting for six decades. Since this edition, Matthias Pees, who was appointed artistic director of the Berliner Festspiele last autumn, has been responsible for the Theatertreffen.
