After Hamas’ attack on Israel, a confrontation broke out at a school in Neukölln. A teacher and two students clash after one of the two students displays the Palestine flag in the schoolyard.
There was a physical altercation between a teacher and two students at a high school in Berlin-Neukölln on Monday. As the police told rbb, there was an exchange of blows between a 61-year-old teacher and a 15-year-old student after another student waved a Palestine flag in the schoolyard of the Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium.
The teacher is said to have warned the 14-year-old and tried to take the flag away from him. According to police, the 15-year-old student then head-butted the teacher, after which the teacher allegedly slapped him. The student then kicked the 61-year-old in the stomach area. At 9:30 a.m. the police were called to the scene and took mutual criminal charges of assault. According to a police spokeswoman, there were no arrests.
In videos circulating on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), the teacher can be seen slapping the student and then being kicked by him and falling over.
As rbb24 learned from sources close to the school, the high school management met for a crisis meeting on Monday afternoon.
Student suspended until the end of the week
“We are currently examining the process in detail and intensive surveys are underway,” said the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family. “One thing is clear: teachers must not be aggressive or even violent toward students.” The matter will therefore also be assessed from a disciplinary perspective.
“Two students involved in the argument, who are said to have physically assaulted the teacher, have been suspended until the end of the week, and a class conference will also be scheduled,” the education administration continued. “Our top priority is to ensure school peace. We will not tolerate condoning the terrorist attacks on Israel in our schoolyards.”
On Monday morning, the Senate administration had already sent an email to the Berlin school management in which, in view of the Hamas attack on Israel, there were fears “that manifest or latent Israel-related anti-Semitism is playing a role among some students.”
The Islamist Hamas launched surprise rocket attacks against Israel from Gaza on Saturday morning. At the same time, armed Palestinians advanced into Israel by land, sea and air and attacked people in several towns near the border. There are said to have been more than 1,000 deaths.
After Hamas’ attack on Israel, supporters of the Palestinian prisoner solidarity network Samidoun celebrated the attacks on Israel on Saturday on Sonnenallee in Neukölln and distributed sweets, among other things.
