“Finally flatten the West!” – Pro-Russian propaganda at left-wing demo
After a demonstration at which thousands in Berlin commemorated the communist leaders Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, pictures on social media caused a sensation: a flag of the Donetsk People’s Republic illegally proclaimed by Russia as well as anti-Western chants.

In the video of the demonstration, left-wing demonstrators – white skin, accent-free German and mostly male – chant anti-Western slogans: “Mali, Donbass, Gaza City: finally flatten the West!”. A banner from a “communist organization” carried in front of the group reads: “The main enemy is at home”. Also to be heard: “From Lützerath to Gaza, Yallah Intifada!”. In addition to the Russian propaganda slogans, the Jewish Forum also reports on anti-Semitic chants.
Another demo block carries the slogan “Youth forward to unity, youth forward to the fight” used by socialist groups such as “Red Youth” and “Fighting Youth” on a banner in front of it, garnished with a hammer and sickle, among other things, and chants clearly audibly : “Only when the masses take up arms can socialism be created!”
At the same event, international observers noticed a flag from the “Donetsk People’s Republic” illegally proclaimed by Russia. This also causes discussions on the Internet.
“I think it’s great that the only two places in Europe outside of Russia where this is happening are Serbia and Germany,” scoffs a Polish-US engineer with a verified account and large reach on Twitter. The original tweet with two photos of the group went by a British correspondent and has since been viewed more than 210,000 times.
A publicly presented approval of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine can be punishable in Germany. As a political demonstration, the Liebknecht-Luxemburg-Demonstration takes place every year, even after the fall of the Berlin Wall, to commemorate the KPD co-founders Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, who were murdered by Freikorps soldiers in Berlin on January 15, 1919. It traditionally ends at the Socialist Memorial in the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery.
