Detectives accuse the Berlin administration of ideological administration
The relationship between the Berlin police and the Berlin social administration is disrupted. This becomes apparent when dealing with the current refugee crisis. The attitude of the capital is becoming a security risk, it is said.
Mn the middle of the largest refugee movement since the Second World War, a dispute broke out between the Berlin authorities and the local police. At its core, the dispute revolves around an old security policy issue.
After the refugee crisis and the attack on Breitscheidplatz in 2016, security checks for refugees in Germany were massively expanded. Berlin had even taken on a leading role nationwide.
To put it simply, a so-called Fast-ID procedure has since been used to check whether there is information about a person. Fingerprints are used for this. This method is completely digital and takes less than a minute. If there is a hit in the databases, i.e. if someone has already attracted attention, there are further police measures.
Exactly this procedure is the Berlin social administration but a thorn in the side. In the house, which is traditionally rather critical of the police, internal arguments are being made that refugees are being criminalized by aggressive police work.
State office planned to exclude the police
The dispute between the authorities and the police even went so far that there are said to have been plans to exclude the police completely from the state office – this was planned at the beginning of April this year. But then came Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and the largest refugee movement since the Second World War began in Europe.
The sheer mass of people who are now coming to Germany can no longer be managed without cross-authority cooperation. This was also clear to the social administration, which is why the authority canceled the plans.
Nevertheless, the state office temporarily suspended the registration of refugees on Sunday. It was said that the rush was overwhelmed.
After WELT reported on this incident, the Association of Criminal Investigators (BDK) reacted. In a fire letter, the largest interest group for detectives in Germany sharply criticizes the Berlin administration. The letter says: “There is a lack of organization and coordination.” The Berlin authorities initially requested support from the police for registration, but canceled the request a few days later, with the result that last Sunday the registration was completely idle .
According to the police officers, it is “essential” that all people from Ukraine who receive a residence permit here are also processed for identification purposes. What this means is that they are fingerprinted and a photo is taken. Considerations to issue residence permits without these measures would potentially endanger those seeking protection themselves.
In view of events such as the “Tiergarten murder”, it does not take too much imagination to imagine that the government of the Russian Federation could also use the stream of people seeking protection to have their own people seep into Germany with the same intentions, it says Paper.
The whole behavior of Berlin, according to the BDK, is an indictment of the German capital given the situation in which people who fled the war find themselves. “Unfortunately, ideological reasons also seem to play a role,” writes the BDK and is now calling for a “cross-departmental, competently staffed crisis team at the Senate Chancellery”. This has already proven its worth during the 2015 refugee crisis.
The federal government is also angry with Berlin. For example, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) sent employees to Berlin last week to help with registration. However, these employees were canceled at short notice. Berlin decided to suspend registration on Sunday.
