Beginning of the carnival season: finally being a fool again – district of Munich

By the time November arrives, Unterhaching’s mayor, Wolfgang Panzer, usually already knows what’s in store for him. Traditionally, on November 11, the Gleisenia carnival party arrives at City Hall at 11:11 sharp and demands that the key be handed over. It was different in the two previous years, due to the pandemic, the mayor was allowed to keep the fortunes of the community in his own hands, there was nothing with Helau and the royal couple. This will now be possible again in 2022, and the fools and fools of the Gleisenia have already announced that they will present the “new madness” “on time” in the town hall.

It is the start of the carnival season, which ends on Ash Wednesday on February 22nd. Although the tradition of celebrating this date and the time leading up to Lent is not as popular in the Munich district as it is in the Cologne area, for example, November 11th is celebrated in many communities around Munich: from Unterschleißheim to the Würmtal they run Preparations for the various events are already in full swing.

The Unterhachinger Faschingsgesellschaft Gleisenia is happy to “finally celebrate in the old way again.” Although everyone is a bit tense, says second cashier Dagmar Gerschkowicz, the show planned for November 11 is not yet as everyone imagined. Especially for the “Old’s Cool” guard, which consists of the mothers of the Gleisenia children’s guard, the appearance on Friday at the proclamation of the carnival prince couple is a real premiere. The “Old’s Cool” guard only came together during the pandemic, says Gerschkowicz.

The chairman of the Unterschleißheim carnival club Weiß-Blau, Thomas Schweissgut, is looking forward to November 11 and the upcoming carnival season full of anticipation: “The last two seasons have been characterized by a very emotional rollercoaster ride of hope and fear,” he says, “and now we’re believing we’re just really looking forward to the start of the season.” For the current board, which was elected in autumn 2020, the coming season will be the first “normal” one that will not be restricted by corona regulations from the outset, he explains. “Of course that can all change in the short term, but for now we’re all really positive.” The chairman looks back on the past two carnival seasons, which the members celebrated at home in front of the computer, with mixed feelings: on the one hand, of course, it wasn’t the real thing to celebrate like “in real life”, but at the same time it showed what a strong club is the carnival club. “Our number of members has remained the same and financially we are doing quite well given the circumstances,” says Schweissgut. Now it just has to be possible to get the potential guests in the same party mood as the members of the Unterschleißheim carnival club, he says, “it’s better to celebrate in a group than alone at home in front of the television.”

Kathrin Schmied, Council President of the Kirchheim Fools’ Council – in short, “Kirnarra” – can hardly wait for November 11th. “This year is indeed almost a small revival,” she says, “because our program is the same as before the pandemic.” All the members, from the youngest to the oldest, were excited to put on their costumes and perform the dances. The first reservations for her gala ball in February were already made in August. “Not only are we happy to be performing again, many carnival enthusiasts are also happy to finally be able to celebrate with us again.”
