Because of smelly durian fruit: gas alarm in Munich in the Elisenhof – Munich

The police and fire brigade move out, ready to clear the Elisenhof – and find fruit in an Asian supermarket that is not called “puke fruit” for nothing.

It is called the stinky or puke fruit, in Asia, it is nevertheless eaten with pleasure because of its complex taste: the durian. On Tuesday morning, such a specimen triggered a gas alarm in the Elisenhof in Munich. According to the fire department, a passer-by noticed a gas-like smell around 8:20 a.m. and called the emergency number 112.

The fire brigade arrived a short time later, and the police also came with a few patrols, ready to clear the shopping center near Munich Central Station. However, gas in the air could not be detected, and a corresponding measurement did not produce any results.

However, the emergency services found that a durian fruit was offered for sale in a nearby Asian shop, which apparently gave off the alleged smell of gas. However, it has not been conclusively clarified whether this putrid, vomit-smelling stench was the one that made the passer-by dial the emergency call: The man had walked on before the fire brigade arrived at Elisenhof.

Due to their smell, durian fruits are banned from many hotels, public transport and airports in Southeast Asia. There are always incidents because of them. In March, for example, a plane from Istanbul to Barcelona had to turn around because an unpleasant odor was detected on board. It also happens again and again that passengers go to the barricades and leave the plane before take-off. And in June 2020, a mail center in Schweinfurt had to be evacuated because a package was leaking stinky gases. The reason here too: a durian.
