It was supposed to be a big celebration with more than 1,000 guests – but now Freyung in Lower Bavaria has canceled the celebrations for the city’s anniversary this Sunday. The reason is curious: a large part of the approximately 1,000 invitations had not yet arrived at the beginning of this week, as Michael Pradl, head of the city’s headquarters, said on Wednesday. First they had Passauer Neue Presse reported.
By the beginning of the week, the city had received numerous responses saying that invitations were still stuck in the mail. On Tuesday, the administration decided to cancel the celebration of the city’s 70th anniversary this Sunday. Otherwise, many guests would only have found out about the celebration at very short notice.
According to Pradl, the city delivered the invitations to the post office on November 16th. When asked, the post office couldn’t say what the problem was – or how many letters were still on the way, said Pradl. According to a spokeswoman, the postal service is “working hard to clarify the matter.” Unlike in the parcel sector, tracing letters is not so easy. The celebration is now to be repeated next year. A date has not been set.
The city will probably rely on the postal service again to send out invitations, said Pradl. But then with a little more advance notice. So far there have been no such problems with the post office. The delays in delivery were unexpected for the city. At least Freyung did not incur any significant costs as a result of the cancellation. The city was still able to cancel the catering and the rooms planned for the celebration belong to the city. Only the costs for printing and sending the invitations will now be incurred again.
