EU approval for weed killer glyphosate officially renewed
The EU Commission has renewed the approval of the controversial weed killer glyphosate in the EU. The authority issued a corresponding regulation on Tuesday, as the Commission announced in Brussels. The decision was announced almost two weeks ago. The approval would have expired in mid-December without renewal, but now it runs until December 2033.
There was previously neither a sufficient majority among the EU states for nor against further use of the drug. The EU Commission was then able to make a decision on its own.

Among other things, there is controversy about whether glyphosate could be carcinogenic. There are also dangers for the environment. A complex investigation by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recently found no unacceptable dangers, but did point to data gaps in several areas.
Union wants further glyphosate approval in Germany
The Union is calling for further possible uses for the weed killer glyphosate in German agriculture. After the approval has been extended at EU level for ten years, the federal government should immediately continue to approve the active ingredient in Germany for the same period, according to a motion from the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, which is expected to be submitted to the Bundestag this Thursday.
The agricultural policy spokesman Albert Stegemann (CDU) said on Tuesday: “The traffic light must not now introduce unilateral national bans through the back door.” That would be unscientific and would put farmers in Germany at a disadvantage.
The EU Commission recently decided to extend approval in the EU by ten years. At the same time, she announced new requirements.
Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) criticized this and referred to possible national steps. The SPD, FDP and Greens have agreed in the coalition agreement to remove glyphosate from the market by the end of 2023. However, calls have already come from the FDP to implement the ten-year extension of glyphosate in Germany.
