With the help of a new camera system on civilian police motorcycles, the Bavarian police intends to target violations by motorcyclists more closely in the future. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) presented the new technology on Wednesday in Nuremberg. “As a result, the misconduct of the traffic offenders can be recorded as evidence and all violations can be completely documented while driving,” said Herrmann. Inconsiderate motorcyclists should be able to be better pulled out of traffic.
He gave the cost of equipping a police motorcycle at around 7,000 euros. The cameras should help to combat the main causes of accidents involving motorcycles and significantly reduce the number of accidents. Last year alone, 112 people died in accidents involving motorcycles in Bavaria. The bikers themselves caused three quarters of the accidents, for example during daring overtaking manoeuvres. The new camera system has been tested in a pilot project in Lower Bavaria since 2020. Step by step, other police headquarters are to be equipped.
