Bavarians eat so much ice cream – Bavarians

Even the poisonous blue Smurf ice cream probably contributes to the increasing sales of ice cream in Bavaria, especially among three to nine year olds. But children’s taste buds are also developing, which is why the common varieties are more popular overall – and there are also reputable ice cream parlors who don’t mix poisonous blue sweets at all. Germans ate 8.1 liters of ice cream per capita and on average in 2022, slightly more than in 2021, when it was 7.9 liters. That is, calculated for the 550,000 inhabitants of Nuremberg, almost 4.5 million liters of ice cream, i.e. around 64 million scoops.

The Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI) has calculated the statistics for the Federal Republic. Not surprisingly, the ice cream experts describe the warm and dry months of July and August 2022 as well as the “sunny high pressure phases” in October and November as the cause of the gluttony. In this respect, it is quite possible that the people of Augsburg will consume more ice cream this year than 2.4 million liters, which corresponds to 35 million scoops. The BDSI includes the industrially produced ice cream (6.5 liters) and an estimate for ice cream parlor ice cream (1.6 liters) in the annual consumption.

No matter in which city, according to statistics, Germans eat by far the largest part of their ice cream at home. The 17.8 percent increase in sales of popsicles, ice cream bars and sandwich ice cream at petrol stations, train stations, swimming pools or amusement parks shows that the restrictions imposed by the corona pandemic are history. Even the high inflation, the confectionery industry rejoices, does not seem to prevent Germans from buying ice cream.

The most popular type of ice cream is vanilla, just ahead of cookies and fruit ice cream like lemon, strawberry, cherry or mango. Only then does chocolate follow, level with caramel. Germans also like to eat walnuts. Unfortunately, there are no regional differences in the preferences for different flavors in the statistics. However, it can be strongly assumed that white sausage ice cream will be more popular in the south than in the north – although fortunately not nearly as popular as poisonous blue Smurf ice cream.
