Bavaria: Upper Palatinate farmer lets 20 cattle die of thirst – Bavaria

In the Upper Palatinate, a farmer let 20 of his cattle die. Apparently, the animals had not been adequately supplied with food and water for several months, as the district office in Amberg reported on Tuesday. The farmer’s health problems may have been the reason.

According to the district authority, the sister of the 62-year-old farmer found the dead animals in the barn on the evening of April 30th. The next day she appeared with her brother at the police station in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, where the farmer reported himself.

In addition to the 20 carcasses, the veterinary authorities also found three cows that had to be killed in the following days. Three other animals continue to receive medical care from another farmer.

Most recently, a farmer was convicted for letting 160 cattle die

The farmer pointed out his poor health to the police. According to the district office, he is receiving specialist treatment. The State Office for Health and Food Safety is now investigating the circumstances of the death of the cows. The police are preparing a procedure for violations of the animal protection law, the veterinary office wants to obtain a ban on keeping animals against the man. In the past, the authority had only found minor deficiencies in the farmer’s cattle husbandry.

It is not the first time that farm animals in Bavaria die like this. Most recently, the trial against a farmer from Neusitz (Ansbach district) caused a stirwhere a farmer starved 160 cattle and was sentenced in court to a year and a half suspended sentence and a lifelong ban on animal husbandry.
