Bavaria: Unemployment rises only moderately thanks to the mild winter – Bavaria

At the beginning of the year, the rate was 3.6 percent, which also has something to do with war refugees from Ukraine. The number of vacancies, on the other hand, is falling.

Unemployment in Bavaria increased seasonally at the beginning of the year. The number of unemployed rose in January by 14.5 percent to 271,289. That is 34,394 more than in the previous month, as the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency announced on Tuesday in Nuremberg. According to the figures collected up to January 12, the unemployment rate in Bavaria was 3.6 percent – an increase of 0.5 points compared to the previous month.

The increase in the number of unemployed this year is significantly lower than usual, said Ralf Holtzwart, CEO of the Bavarian Regional Directorate. One reason for this is the mild winter so far. In many external professions, such as in the construction industry, work continues and few people register as unemployed. In the same period last year, the unemployment rate in Bavaria was 3.3 percent. Compared to the previous year, the number of unemployed increased by 17,761 – an increase of 7 percent.

According to the regional directorate, unemployment in Bavaria would have fallen by around 4,000 without the registration of Ukrainians. Nevertheless, one notices that unemployment is falling less and less, even without the Ukrainian refugees.

The demand for workers in Bavaria is still very high, said Holtzwart. At the same time, the number of registered jobs has fallen continuously since August 2022 from 163,864 to currently 146,991. “Reasons for the slowdown in the number of new jobs could be the discussion about rising energy costs, the uncertainties about supply bottlenecks due to the Russian war of aggression and renewed supply bottlenecks from China, which was held in the summer,” explained Holtzwart.

The labor market expert certifies “excellent values” for the number of employees in the Free State. According to the latest available data for November 2022, 5.94 million people in Bavaria were employed subject to social security contributions. Compared to the same month last year, that’s 90,100 more people – an increase of 1.5 percent.
