Eckard Friedrich from Braunlage has been vacationing three times a year in the Bayerwald municipality of Konzell for 50 years. He is welcome at the regulars’ tables and in the courtyards, and he is fully integrated into community life. Nevertheless, moving is out of the question for him.

Half a century ago, right after the Olympic Games in Munich, Eckard Friedrich visited the community of Konzell, a good 30 kilometers north-east of Straubing. “It was more of a coincidence,” says the 79-year-old, who lives in Braunlage in the Harz mountains, where he worked from 1970 to 2009 as a teacher at the secondary school. A friend took him to the Bavarian Forest at the time, he says on the phone, the friend’s father had bought an old farm in the Kleinhöfling district. At that time, it was still possible to purchase a property without having to shell out millions.
