Bavaria: number of completed apartments decreased – Bavaria

According to the State Statistical Office, the number of new apartments that have been completed in Bavaria has fallen in the past year. In 2021, 60,857 new apartments were ready for occupancy, almost five percent less than the year before. Almost half are primarily heated by renewable forms of energy. In the case of apartment buildings with at least three apartments, there was a decline of 2.8 percent, the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday in Fürth. The decline in Upper Franconia is particularly strong, while Swabia was able to almost maintain the previous year’s level. According to studies, there is a lack of tens of thousands of apartments in Bavaria, especially in the conurbations around the state capital of Munich and around Nuremberg. Affordable housing is scarce. Bavaria’s Minister of Construction Christian Bernreiter (CSU) called on the federal government to look for solutions to counter the sharply rising costs and the shortage of materials and labor in construction. “The challenges for the construction sector are increasing all the time: the lack of skilled workers, increased material costs and skyrocketing energy costs are having an impact,” said the minister. This affects housing associations and private home builders alike. The federal government’s goal of creating 400,000 new homes every year is in jeopardy if remedial action is not taken.
