Bavaria: Members of the state parliament get higher “compensation” – Bavaria

Bavaria’s state parliamentarians will receive 3.7 percent more money from July 1st. The monthly so-called diets then amount to 9215 euros. The adjustment follows the general income development with a time lag, as the President of the State Parliament Ilse Aigner (CSU) announced on Wednesday. “Incomes in Bavaria have risen recently, and consumer prices have risen even more. This is now reflected in the amount of MPs’ allowances,” she explained. As always, calculations by the State Statistical Office are decisive.

The Bavarian Members of Parliament Act stipulates that the so-called “compensation” for the members of the state parliament is adjusted on July 1 to the general income development of the previous year – for 2023 the development from the 3rd quarter of 2021 to the 3rd quarter of 2022 is decisive. The benchmark is the index of average gross monthly earnings without special payments in Bavaria, which is calculated by the State Statistical Office. The authority orients itself in particular to the development of the income of employees in the manufacturing industry and in the service sector.

“In the meantime, the diets for the members of the Bavarian state parliament had fallen during the corona pandemic. But because the average income of people in Bavaria fortunately increased again last year, this is now also reflected in the amount of the diets for the members of the Bavarian Parliament,” said Aigner. “Due to the legally anchored index solution, they rise moderately.”

The so-called flat-rate fee for each MP will increase this year from 3,726 to 3,984 euros – an increase of 6.9 percent. This increase is based on the consumer price index. Last year, after Corona, diets increased by 4.3 percent. The year before, they had declined in the wake of the crisis.
