Bavaria: bosses get suspended sentences after accidental deaths of four workers – Bavaria

After the accidental death of four workers due to a ceiling collapsing on a construction site, the district court in Landsberg sentenced the two managing directors of the construction company to suspended sentences on Monday. The 64-year-old senior boss of the company received eight months’ probation, his 30-year-old son 14 months. The son was the site manager responsible for the accident site.

In October 2020, the ceiling collapsed during concrete work in Denklingen, Upper Bavaria. A 16-year-old youth, a 34-year-old and two 37-year-olds were buried under debris and liquid concrete and died. Another worker was physically injured and also developed significant mental problems as a result of the accident. The two defendants were convicted of negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm.

The construction project involved the erection of a new headquarters for the construction company itself. The accident happened because an inadequate support structure was built when erecting a concrete slab around five meters high. Judge Michael Eberle said the scaffolding collapsed “like a house of cards” for various reasons. In addition to the two accused, others were also responsible for the collapse of the ceiling, emphasized the district court director.
