Bavaria: Archaeologists make sensational discovery on Fraueninsel – Bavaria

The fact that they would find the foundations of an old church under the meadow in the middle of Fraueninsel in Lake Chiemsee would not have surprised the geophysicists from the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation. That’s exactly what they were looking for: the foundation walls of St. Martin, first mentioned in 1393, demolished in 1803 with the secularization in Bavaria, which did not spare the venerable Frauenwörth monastery. The shapes that the ground radar detected a good half a meter below the turf matched exactly the copper engraving on which Michael Wening documented “The Royal Stüfft and Adeliche Closter Frauen Chiemsee” including the St. Martin’s Church in 1701.
