Barcelona best city for teleworking, Paris is eighth

Want to change your work environment? Try the workations! Yes but where ? The world leader in co-working spaces, IWG, established the ranking, relayed in the South China Morning Postof the 25 most suitable cities around the world, for teleworking while enjoying a certain quality of life.

Teleworking abroad is becoming popular

The Covid-19 pandemic has largely contributed to the democratization of teleworking and the confinements have made many workers want to go elsewhere. So much so that a concept was born: workations, the contraction of work and vacation in English. All over the world, people have settled, sometimes thousands of kilometers from home, to combine business with pleasure.

Barcelona, number 1 for digital nomads

IWG then produced a list of ideal destinations for these workations, taking into account nine criteria: climate, culture, access to transport, food and drinks, level of happiness, high Internet speed throughput or the availability of flexible workspaces. First place goes to Barcelona, very popular with teleworkers for its dynamism and Mediterranean climate. The capital of Catalonia received the honorable score of 58.5 out of 90. Since January 1, 2023, Spain has offered tailor-made packages for digital nomads, with an adapted residence and work permit, to exercise their activity wherever they wish in the country.

Capitals from the four corners of the world in the ranking

In second place, we find Toronto (Canada), followed by Beijing (China). The Canadian city lost a few points because of its climate, but the high level of happiness of its residents and the price of rent allow it to obtain high scores. For its part, the Chinese capital stands out for the quality of its cultural offering, notably thanks to its numerous museums and art galleries. However, digital nomads who would like to settle down for a while in Beijing will have to equip their computer with a VPN to have access to Google and other sites censored by local authorities.

After the top 3, Milan (Italy), New York (United States), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Amsterdam (Netherlands) follow. Paris appears in eighth position in the ranking, with very low scores for the price of food and a cup of coffee. At the end of the list we find Jakarta, then Lisbon, although the city is often referred to as an El Dorado for foreign teleworkers.
