Ryan Gosling: Watching “Bachelorette” helped for Ken role
Gosling describes his role in the “Barbie” film, which earned him an Oscar nomination, as the “most difficult role” he has ever played.
In the box office hit “Barbie” by director Greta Gerwig and with leading actress Margot Robbie, Gosling embodies the friend of the Barbie doll – who doesn’t quite know who he is without Barbie. The “Bachelorette” candidates also sat around idle and waited for the bachelorette to pay attention to them, the Canadian explained. “And, yes, they don’t have any attention other than what she gives them.”
The men in the flirting show are often shown with only a single defining characteristic, Gosling mused. “One guy has the glasses. One guy has the one earring. If you challenge that person and do the same thing they do, you would be violating their identity.” In order to distinguish himself from the other Kens in Barbieland, his Ken started wearing a fur coat.
Gosling described his role, which earned him an Oscar nomination, as the “most difficult role” he has ever played. Old memories of his time in the “Mickey Mouse Club” also served him well for his role, Gosling said. “I could identify with Ken and the need to find himself and stand out.”
